Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

At Todoist, our mission is to empower people with simple yet powerful tools.

We're a multidisciplinary, fully-remote, team that's passionate about creating products, like Todoist https://www.todoist.com/ and Comms, that improve people's lives. We thrive on innovating new solutions to old productivity challenges and we seek to rethink how productivity tools are made.

OUR CORE VALUES

They are few, but they are mighty. From creating processes to decision-making and recruiting, we build our four core values into nearly every single thing we do.

  • Ambition. You aspire to put a dent in the universe. You set high standards for yourself and those around you. You solve issues that have a high impact on our customers and our company.
  • Mastery. You care deeply about the quality of your work. You're continuously learning and pushing yourself to the limits of your ability. As a champion of your craft, you are also a champion of your well-being – you work intensely, then disconnect completely.
  • Independence. Others can trust that you'll deliver on time. You keep your word and trust your teammates to do the same. You are proactive, take ownership, and remain accountable with little or no direction.
  • Communication. Your communication is clear, concise, and engaging. You keep others in the loop and never go radio silent. You speak respectfully and foster warm relationships through your interactions. You're culturally and socially aware and can appropriately navigate social situations.

We invite you to visit our blog https://www.todoist.com/inspiration to learn more about us, our values, and how we work.

YOUR TEAM & ROLE

We're looking for an Apple Engineer to join the team that builds Todoist for iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and the iOS app for Comms, our team communication product. Millions of people open Todoist on their iPhone every day, and you'll be one of the engineers responsible for making that experience fast, reliable, and a pleasure to use.

The Apple team is seven engineers plus the Head of Apple Engineering, working fully remote and async-first. Rather than one architect deciding everything, each engineer is the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) for an area they own and evolve: architecture, foundations, testing, performance, accessibility, integrations, and build configurations. You'd take on one of these areas as you settle in.

We're in the middle of modernizing a codebase that has been shipping since 2013. The storage layer is done: we moved from Realm to GRDB, and hundreds of persistence tests now run on Swift Testing. The work ahead is in the UI and concurrency layers. Most of our screens are still UIKit, and our asynchronous code mixes completion handlers, Combine, and async/await. We're moving both forward, to SwiftUI and Swift Concurrency, in an app that millions of people rely on every day. You'd join that work early enough to shape how it's done.

YOU WILL

  • Design, build, and ship features across Todoist and Comms on Apple platforms, from spec review through App Store release
  • Own an area of the codebase as its DRI, setting its direction and raising its quality over time
  • Move screens from UIKit to SwiftUI and legacy asynchronous code to Swift Concurrency, within an architecture that is MVVM-C with dependency injection today
  • Investigate and fix the crashes and performance problems that reach us through Sentry and our Customer Experience team
  • Keep the CI pipeline and tooling healthy, including the automations we've built to investigate CI failures
  • Work in cross-functional squads with designers, backend engineers, and product managers, and take a turn on the Hero rotation supporting Customer Experience

WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS

This is a backfill on a team that has more modernization work planned than hands to do it. The move to SwiftUI and Swift Concurrency, the sync engine improvements, and the Comms iOS app all need engineers who can own a piece end to end. Without this hire, at least one of those slows down.

ABOUT THE TEAM

You'll report to Jaime Azevedo, Head of Apple Engineering. The team values async-first communication, direct and frequent feedback, ownership of outcomes, and shipping in small, reviewable steps. We meet in person twice a year at company retreats.

ABOUT YOU

It's important to us that the person we hire will thrive in this role. Here are the core things we believe will set you up for success:

Technical skills

  • Professional experience designing, building, and maintaining production iOS apps in Swift, and following the language's evolution closely
  • SwiftUI experience in production, and enough UIKit to work in and migrate an older codebase
  • Hands-on Swift Concurrency: async/await, actors, and structured concurrency, including moving callback-based or Combine-based code to it
  • Familiarity with common persistence approaches such as GRDB, SQLite, or Core Data, and with what it takes to migrate user data safely in an app people have used for years
  • A working testing practice: unit and UI tests you'd be comfortable defending, and an opinion on what is worth testing
  • Comfort with Git, pull-request-based workflows, and CI pipelines, and experience giving reviews that make other people's code better
  • Familiarity with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and with what each WWDC changes for us

Mindset

  • You leverage AI tools effectively: you use code assistants and agents to move faster, while applying judgment to validate what they produce and catch their mistakes
  • You thrive in a feedback-forward environment and treat direct feedback, given and received, as the normal way a team improves
  • You want to be more than an executor: you look for ways to inform the direction of what you build and help sketch a plan that delivers value with the risk taken out early
  • You take full ownership of your projects and deliver consistent, high-quality work on time without someone looking over your shoulder
  • You write clearly in English and are comfortable making decisions in writing, since that is how most of our work happens
  • You care about accessibility and security as part of building well, not as extras

Nice to have

  • Experience with watchOS, widgets, or app extensions
  • Experience in a large-scale codebase migration or a monorepo setup
  • Experience working remotely across time zones

Apply soonest, as these roles don't come along often and we move fast.

Not sure the role is a good fit for you? If you think you meet at least half of the requirements, but not all of them, please consider applying.
