Job description
Contract Financial Modeler — Investment Banking & Corporate Finance (Excel)
Full-time independent contractor role, 40 hours/week.
Overview
We are partnering with a U.S.-based technology company building advanced AI systems focused on financial modeling and decision-making.
The goal is to train AI to think like real financial professionals: how models are built from scratch, how assumptions are structured, and how decisions are made using financial models.
This is a hands-on Excel modeling role. You will build detailed financial models from a blank spreadsheet and clearly explain your logic.
This is a highly selective search. We are only considering investment banking and corporate finance candidates from top-tier backgrounds with extensive, hands-on model-building experience.
This role IS:
- Building financial models from a blank spreadsheet
- Structuring assumptions, drivers, and logic
- Linking full model flows: operations → cash flow → valuation → returns
- Debugging and improving model accuracy
- Explaining why a model works, not just producing outputs
This role is NOT:
- Dashboards, reporting, or data visualization
- FP&A focused on reporting, budgeting, or variance analysis
- Pitch decks, comps, or formatting work without building the underlying model
- High-level strategy without hands-on modeling
- Using AI tools to generate models
Investment Banking
- Fully integrated 3-statement models
- DCF and sum-of-the-parts valuation built from first principles
- Merger models: accretion/dilution, purchase price allocation, synergies
- LBO analysis in support of sponsor or sell-side processes
- Live deal execution on M&A, capital markets, or restructuring transactions
Corporate Finance
- Corporate development models: acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures
- Capital structure, financing, and capital allocation decisions
- Long-range operating models that drive investment or strategic decisions
- Treasury modeling: liquidity, debt capacity, and refinancing analysis
What You'll Do
- Build financial models from scratch in Excel across different use cases
- Review and debug models built by others
- Identify incorrect assumptions, broken logic, and risks
- Analyze relationships across operations, cash flow, valuation, and returns
- Clearly explain financial logic and decision-making
What Makes a Strong Candidate
- 2–10 years in finance roles with heavy, hands-on modeling
- Experience at a bulge-bracket bank, elite boutique, or a major corporate development or corporate finance team
- Direct work on live transactions or major investment decisions, backed by models you built yourself
- Experience with U.S. businesses, U.S. clients, or U.S. GAAP
- Proven ability to build models from a blank spreadsheet (no templates)
- High attention to detail and model accuracy
- Strong communication skills (English required)
Not a Fit If
Your experience is primarily:
- Reviewing models, making small updates, or producing pitch decks, comps, or outputs
- FP&A reporting, budgeting, or dashboards
- Research or valuation support without building full models
- BI tools, analytics workflows, or reporting automation
Or:
- You have not built full financial models yourself
- You rely heavily on templates, tools, or AI to generate models
- You are not comfortable explaining your work in detail
Interview Process
All candidates complete a ~3-hour take-home Excel modeling exercise.
- Designed to reflect real-world modeling work
- Must be completed independently in Excel
Final Note
Candidates with private equity, credit, or debt modeling experience should apply to our Private Equity & Credit posting instead.
